This series intends to celebrate women who paint flowers from Dutch painter Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750) to Canadian trailblazers Mary Hiester Reid (1854 – 1921), Molly Lamb Bobak (1920-2014) and beyond. Did patriarchy expect European women to make art within strict domestic frameworks? Absolutely. Did this stop them from painting great works? Absolutely not.
I made this first set of screen prints after I was asked in 2021 to respond to works held by the Archives of Ontario. I selected Mary Hiester Reid and used a detail of her painting Roses. It’s an oil on canvas purchased by the province in 1897.
